ICBC Step-by-step guide

How to get your British Columbia learner's (L) licence

Who can apply, what to bring, what it costs, what happens if you don't pass, and the rules once you have it. Then practise for the test.

Step by step

  1. Study ICBC's Learn to Drive Smart. About one in five test questions are about road signs.
  2. If you're under 18, have a parent or legal guardian complete ICBC's Parent/Guardian Consent form. Print it and sign it with a pen: scanned, copied or digitally signed forms aren't accepted.
  3. Take the knowledge test online, or at an ICBC driver licensing office (book an appointment, or walk in and wait). Online, you need an email address, one piece of accepted primary ID and a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, which doesn't have to be yours. You have 72 hours after registering to start, and 45 minutes to finish.
  4. Passing online doesn't licence you yet. Visit a driver licensing office with the same ID, pass the vision screening and pay for your learner's licence.
