Manitoba rules of the road practice test

Practise the rules of the road questions on the Manitoba knowledge test: right of way, speed limits, safe driving, impairment and licensing. Every answer comes with a short explanation.

About the rules test

On the real Manitoba test, sign and rules questions are mixed in one 30-question test (25 correct to pass). This page lets you practise the rules on their own; the full test on the main page is mixed like the real one.

Passing on the right is permitted only:
  • Never; passing another vehicle on the right side is always illegal in Manitoba
  • On any road at all, as long as you use the paved shoulder to get past the vehicle
  • When overtaking a left-turning vehicle, on one-way streets, or on streets with marked lanes
  • Whenever the vehicle ahead of you is going slower than the posted speed limit

When overtaking a left-turning vehicle, on one-way streets, or on streets with marked lanes

Never drive off the road to pass.

A truck swings wide to the left to make a right turn. You should:
  • Follow closely so you can get through the turn with it
  • Not cut in between the truck and the right curb
  • Pass it on the right while it swings out to the left
  • Sound your horn to let the driver know you're there

Not cut in between the truck and the right curb

The driver can't see cars directly behind or beside them.

At an intersection with no signals or signs, two vehicles approach. Both must:
  • Keep their speed, and the faster of the two vehicles goes first
  • Slow down, and the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right
  • Sound their horns before entering, and the first to honk goes first
  • Stop completely, and the larger of the two vehicles goes first

Slow down, and the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right

Even the driver with the right-of-way must use care to avoid a collision.

How long must Full-stage drivers continue to have no drugs or alcohol in their system?
  • No limit
  • The first 12 months
  • The first 36 months
  • Until age 21

The first 36 months

After that, normal limits apply.

Without anti-lock brakes, applying steady pressure without locking the wheels is called:
  • Cadence braking
  • Engine braking
  • Pump braking
  • Threshold braking

Threshold braking

It lets you keep steering control.

A second Tiered Administrative Licence Suspension within 10 years lasts:
  • 15 days
  • 30 days
  • 60 days
  • 72 hours

15 days

A third is 30 days, and a fourth or later is 60 days.

Before parallel parking, you can signal your stop by:
  • Flashing your brake lights about three times, then signalling right
  • Sounding your horn twice and pulling into the space right away
  • Turning on your hazard lights and stopping in the middle of the lane
  • Waving out the window so drivers behind know to go around you

Flashing your brake lights about three times, then signalling right

Don't stop suddenly if a vehicle is close behind.

When approaching a horse and rider, you should:
  • Flash your lights so the rider knows you're there
  • Honk to warn them before you start to pass
  • Not sound your horn, and pass slowly and widely
  • Pass them quickly so the horse isn't upset for long

Not sound your horn, and pass slowly and widely

Be ready to stop if the rider signals you to.
