Step by step
- Be at least 16. If you're under 18, have a parent or guardian sign the consent form at the back of the Driver's Handbook, witnessed by a non-relative.
- Complete an approved mandatory motorcycle training course. The handbook calls the proof the blue certificate. You need it before you apply.
- Study the New Brunswick Driver's Handbook, especially Part 8: What every motorcyclist must know, plus the rules of the road and the signs.
- At Service New Brunswick, pass a vision screening (20/40 in the best eye) and the written tests: the road sign test and the rules test. On the Class 7 versions, the sign test is 20 signs (stop, yield and school zone must be right, and no more than four errors on the rest) and the rules test is 20 questions with 16 to pass.
- Ride for 12 months without interruption in the motorcycle GDL program, then pass the road test on a mechanically fit motorcycle. Book the road test through Service New Brunswick Teleservices (1-888-762-8600).

If you don't pass
A rewrite costs $15. Test results are valid for six months, so finish getting your licence within six months of starting.
Once you have your licence
- In the motorcycle GDL program (12 months): no passengers, no towing a trailer, no riding from sunset to sunrise, and zero alcohol and drugs, whatever your age.
- You must hold the GDL licence for 12 months without interruption before the road test.
- If you already hold another class of licence, such as Class 5, the motorcycle endorsement is added to it after you complete the motorcycle GDL program.
- A Class 6D (or a D endorsement) limits you to motorcycles up to 550 cc; Class 6 (or A) covers all motorcycles.
