- Age 16Parent or guardian consent under 19
- Four testsBalance, written, sign and vision
- $60Class 6I licence, valid two years
- 12 monthsOr 8 with a recognized course
Step by step
- Study the Driver's Handbook, including its Motorcycle Safety chapter. The written test covers safe riding, rules of the road, traffic signs and signals, and licensing, based on the handbook and the Highway Traffic Act.
- Book your motorcycle permit test online with Motor Registration and take the written test at a driver examination centre. You also take a sign test and a vision test.
- Pass the balance test on a closed course at a driver examination centre or Government Service Centre: a serpentine ride through pylons (no foot down) and a straight line brake test (stop with both brakes, front wheel within 60 cm of the line). An approved motorcycle safety course can waive it; bring the certificate of completion.
- The balance, written and vision tests can be done in any order. Once all are passed and you pay the fee, you get a Class 6 Level I (learner) licence.
- Ride as a learner for 12 months (eight with a recognized motorcycle training course), then pass a road test in traffic of about 30 minutes to become a Class 6 Level II (novice) rider.
- If you already hold a full licence with no learner or novice level, the wait before the road test is three months, or one month with an approved motorcycle safety course.
What to bring
- Valid identification documents (originals) for the written test
- If you're under 19, the driver's licence application form signed by a parent or guardian
- For the balance test: clothing that covers your entire body (reflective if possible), an approved helmet and eye protection
- For the balance test: your motorcycle with no defects, proof of insurance (pink liability card), the registration permit and photo ID

A balance test, a written test, a sign test and a vision test. An approved motorcycle safety course can replace the balance test.
What is the pass mark?
Newfoundland and Labrador's written tests need 85% to pass. The province doesn't publish the number of questions on the motorcycle test.
