Newfoundland and Labrador Step-by-step guide

How to get your Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 Level I learner's licence (5I)

Who can apply, what to bring, what it costs, what happens if you don't pass, and the rules once you have it. Then practise for the test.

Step by step

  1. Study the Driver's Handbook (Road User Guide).
  2. Register on MyGovNL with your Newfoundland and Labrador photo ID, or with your email and MCP card, and take the Class 5 Level I test online. To take it in French or Ukrainian, book an appointment at a Motor Registration office. If you need help reading or writing, contact the office and book ahead.
  3. After you pass, book an appointment. You can't drive until you've been. At the appointment your results are checked, you take a vision test and have your photo taken, and your original ID is examined (proof of age, identity and, if it applies, legal presence in Canada).
  4. If you're under 19, a parent or guardian signs the consent block on the driver's licence application form.
  5. You get a temporary permit at the appointment, and your card comes by mail.
