About the Nova Scotia motorcycle learner tests

To ride as a learner in Nova Scotia you need a learner motorcycle licence (Class LM). You pass a written test on motorcycle safety rules, from Chapter 8 of the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook, and a practical skills (balance) test on your motorcycle. New riders with no driver's licence first qualify for a Class 7 learner's licence: road signs and rules of the road. The practice tests on this page cover the motorcycle rules test and the road signs, with every answer explained. For the Class 7 rules test, use our main Nova Scotia page.

How to study

  1. Read Chapter 8, "Motorcycles", of the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook and the Registry of Motor Vehicles' Motorcycle Driver's Licence page.
  2. Take a full practice test: 20 motorcycle safety rules questions, then 20 signs, each scored on its own.
  3. Review the questions you missed, then use Smart practice to drill your weak topics.
  4. When you score 16 or more on both parts several times in a row, you're ready for the real tests.

Frequently asked questions

Which tests do I take for a Nova Scotia motorcycle learner licence?

A written test on motorcycle safety rules and a practical skills (balance) test on your motorcycle. If you don't have a driver's licence, you first qualify for a Class 7 learner's licence, which means a vision test, a road sign test and a rules of the road test.

How many questions are on the motorcycle test, and what do I need to pass?

Nova Scotia doesn't publish the number of questions or the pass mark for the motorcycle rules test. Our motorcycle practice tests have 20 questions with 16 correct to pass (80%), the same as each part of the Class 7 test, and the road sign practice tests have 20 with 16 to pass.

Can I take the motorcycle knowledge test online?

Yes. Nova Scotia offers the knowledge test online for a Motorcycle Learner Licence, as well as for the Class 7 and Class 8. You need a desktop or laptop with a webcam.

How much does it cost?

The learner motorcycle licence (Class LM) is free. The road test is $52.54, a first Class 6N licence is $66.95, and a motorcycle endorsement is $11.90, according to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. An approved training course usually includes the balance test.

What are the rules for a motorcycle learner in Nova Scotia?

Zero blood alcohol, no passengers at any time, and riding only from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. The learner licence is good for one year.

Where do I practise the Class 7 rules of the road test?

On our main Nova Scotia page. New riders without a driver's licence take the same Class 7 knowledge test as a car learner first.

Are these the real Nova Scotia test questions?

No. Every question here is original, written from the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook and the Registry of Motor Vehicles' motorcycle licence page. This site is not affiliated with the Government of Nova Scotia.

How many practice questions are there?

301: 183 motorcycle safety rules questions and 118 road sign questions. Practice tests don't repeat a question until you have seen every question in that part.
