About the PEI Instruction Permit (Class 7) test

In Prince Edward Island you can get an Instruction Permit (Class 7, Stage 1) from age 16. To get it, you pass a written test on traffic laws and safe driving, a sign recognition test and a vision test. The full practice test on this page mixes rules and signs together, and every answer comes with a short explanation from the PEI Driver's Handbook.

  4. When you score 32 or more on the full test several times in a row, you're ready for the real one.

Frequently asked questions

What is on the PEI Instruction Permit test?

A written test on traffic laws and safe driving practices, and a sign recognition test, all based on the PEI Driver's Handbook. If you can't read the written test, you can ask for an oral test.

What score do I need to pass?

PEI doesn't publish the number of questions or the pass mark online. 40 questions with 32 correct (80%) is the widely reported format, so our full practice test is 40 questions and you need 32 to pass.

How old do I have to be to get an Instruction Permit in PEI?

16. If you are under 18, both parents or legal guardians must sign the consent form in the Co-pilot brochure. You also need to pass a vision test.

Where do I take the test?

Make an appointment at a Highway Safety or Access PEI office and pay the fee. If you are enrolled in a certified driver education program, you write the test at the driving school, but you still go to Access PEI for the vision test.

What happens if I fail?

You must wait at least seven days before writing the test again. There is no extra fee to rewrite it.

How soon can I take my road test?

After 365 days with your Instruction Permit, or 275 days if you are enrolled in a certified driver education program. You must also complete the Novice Driver Course. The permit is valid for two years.

Are these the real PEI test questions?

No. Every question here is original, written from the PEI Driver's Handbook. This site is not affiliated with the Government of Prince Edward Island or the Highway Safety Division.

How many practice questions are there?

450: 331 rules of the road questions and 119 road sign questions. Practice tests don't repeat a question until you have seen every question in that part.
