About the Quebec SAAQ Class 5 knowledge test

In Quebec you can get a learner's licence from age 16, with a parent's consent if you are under 18. First you pass Phase 1 of the driving course. After at least 10 months with a learner's licence, you take the SAAQ knowledge test, then the road test after 12 months. The practice tests on this page cover the same material, and every answer comes with a short explanation from the SAAQ's guides.

How to study

  1. Read the SAAQ's Driver's Handbook. The current edition of the Guide de la route (PDF) is free on the SAAQ website in French.
  2. Take the rules and road sign practice tests. Each one is a fresh set of questions.
  3. Review the questions you missed, then use Smart practice to drill your weak topics.
  4. When you score 15 or more on both parts several times in a row, you're ready for the real test.

Frequently asked questions

When do you take the SAAQ knowledge test?

After you have held a learner's licence for at least 10 months. To get the learner's licence, you first pass Phase 1 of the driving course and the driving school's theory exam (Module 5), then the SAAQ's vision test.

What is on the knowledge test?

Regulations (Quebec's Highway Safety Code), road signs and signals, and safe driving behaviour. The SAAQ's Driver's Handbook and its guide to driving a passenger vehicle cover the material.

What score do I need to pass?

The SAAQ doesn't publish the number of questions or the pass mark in its guides. A 75% pass mark is the most widely reported format. Our practice tests have two parts of 20 questions, and you need 15 correct on each.

What happens if I fail?

You can take the test again 28 days later, by appointment. The same wait applies to the road test.

When can I take the road test?

Once you have passed the knowledge test and held a learner's licence for at least 12 months. You then get a 2-year probationary licence, with a 4 demerit point limit and a zero-alcohol rule.

Can I take the test in English?

Yes. The test is offered in French and English, and the SAAQ says you can ask to take it in Spanish, Mandarin or Arabic. This page is also available in French: tap FR at the top of the screen.

Are these the real SAAQ test questions?

No. Every question here is original, written from Quebec's Highway Safety Code and the SAAQ's guides. This site is not affiliated with the SAAQ or the Government of Quebec.

How many practice questions are there?

311: 183 rules and driving questions and 128 road sign questions. Practice tests don't repeat a question until you have seen every question in that part.
