About the ICBC motorcycle knowledge test

To start riding a motorcycle in British Columbia, you pass ICBC's motorcycle knowledge test and a vision and medical screening to get a learner's licence: a Class 8L if you're a new rider, or a Class 6L if you already hold a B.C. Class 1 to 5 licence. The test is 40 multiple-choice questions on Learn to ride smart, and you need 32 correct to pass. The full practice test on this page mixes the questions the same way, and every answer comes with a short explanation.

What the test covers

Sample questions

About how much of your stopping power comes from the front brake?

About 70 per cent

The front brake is the more powerful of the two. Under normal conditions, use both brakes at the same time.

Above about 10 km/h, to make the motorcycle lean and turn left you:

Push gently on the left handlebar

This is countersteering: push left, lean left, go left.

Most riders treat which lane position as the "default"?

The left lane position

It's often the dominant position, away from parked cars and roadside debris. Keep scanning and change position when another is safer.

Riding between lanes of traffic (lane splitting) in B.C. is:

Illegal and dangerous

Traffic can start up suddenly, someone can change lanes or open a door, and you have no space margin.

Railway tracks cross your path at a sharp angle and could trap your wheels. You should:

Slow down and cross as close to 90 degrees as you can

Crossing at 45 to 90 degrees is safe. Move into position well ahead, without angling into oncoming traffic.

Experts suggest how much riding experience before you carry a passenger?

About 2,500 kilometres

A passenger changes how the bike accelerates, brakes and turns. Learners can't carry passengers at all.

If a riding group is larger than six, you should:

Split it into two or more smaller groups

Ride in a staggered formation, with the least experienced riders just behind the leader.

How to study

  1. Read ICBC's Learn to ride smart, chapters 1 to 10. (ICBC says chapters 11 and 12, on licensing, are reference only and not tested.)
  2. Take a full practice test. Each one is a fresh, mixed set of 40 questions you haven't seen yet.
  3. Review the questions you missed, then use Smart practice to drill your weak topics.
  4. When you score 32 or more several times in a row, you're ready for the real test.

Frequently asked questions

What is on the ICBC motorcycle knowledge test?

40 multiple-choice questions on how well you know Learn to ride smart: the rules of the road, traffic signs and signals, and safe riding practices. The test is the same for a Class 8L (new riders) and a Class 6L (riders who already hold a B.C. Class 1 to 5 licence).

How many questions do I need to get right?

32 out of 40, which is 80%. You have 45 minutes, and the test ends as soon as you reach 32 correct or go past the number of wrong answers allowed. If you don't pass, you can try again after 24 hours.

Can I take the motorcycle knowledge test online?

Yes. ICBC offers the Class 6 and 8 motorcycle knowledge test online as well as at driver licensing offices. You still visit an office for vision and medical screening before you get your learner's licence.

Do I also need to pass the car knowledge test?

Only if you have never held a driver's licence (or hold only a Class 7 or 7L). Then you also pass the 50-question passenger vehicle test, before or at the same time. The $15 knowledge test fee covers both.

What are the rules for a Class 8L learner?

Ride within sight of a supervisor who is at least 25 and holds a full Class 6 licence, no more than 60 km/h, no passengers, daylight only, zero alcohol and drugs, no hand-held or hands-free devices, and display the L sign. The supervisor and speed rules come off when you pass the motorcycle skills test.

Are the road sign questions the same as for the Class 7L?

Yes. The signs are the same for every road user, so the motorcycle practice uses our B.C. Class 7L sign questions.

Are these the real ICBC test questions?

No. Every question here is original, written from ICBC's Learn to ride smart. This site is not affiliated with ICBC or the Government of British Columbia.

How many practice questions are there?

613: 486 motorcycle and rules of the road questions and 127 road sign questions. Practice tests don't repeat a question until you have seen every question in that section.
