B.C. Motorcycle rules of the road practice test

Practise the rules of the road questions on the B.C. Motorcycle knowledge test: right of way, speed limits, safe driving, impairment and licensing. Every answer comes with a short explanation.

About the rules test

On the real B.C. Motorcycle test, sign and rules questions are mixed in one 40-question test (32 correct to pass). This page lets you practise the rules on their own; the full test on the main page is mixed like the real one.

Where a school zone sign shows 30 km/h, when does the limit end?
  • At the back of the school zone sign across the street
  • At the far end of the school building or its field
  • At the next intersection after the school building
  • When you can no longer see any children near the road

At the back of the school zone sign across the street

It's in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, or the hours on the sign.

Why can you get cold enough for hypothermia even on a warm day?
  • Helmets trap cold air around your head and neck
  • The engine pulls body heat away from your legs
  • The wind from your speed lowers body temperature
  • Warm days always cool off quickly in the afternoon

The wind from your speed lowers body temperature

Always be prepared with the right gear.

Can you carry a passenger with a learner's licence?
  • No
  • Yes, if they're licensed

The merging area is divided from the freeway by:
  • A broken white line
  • A double yellow line
  • A solid white line
  • Raised markers

A broken white line

Use it to find a safe gap.

Your headlight fails at night. First:
  • Brake hard and stop right there in your lane
  • Speed up so you reach the next town sooner
  • Switch beams to see if the other one works
  • Turn off the engine at once and coast

Switch beams to see if the other one works

If neither works, slow down, pull off the road and get help. Turn on hazard lights if you have them.

Your riding friends are taking curves faster than you're comfortable with. You should:
  • Follow their exact lines through curves
  • Keep up so you don't fall behind
  • Pass them to lead the group
  • Ride at your own safe speed and meet up later

Identify the problem, think about consequences, find alternatives and follow through.

You should replace a tire:
  • After every 1,000 kilometres
  • Only when it goes flat
  • When the shiny finish wears off
  • When the wear bar appears, or before

When the wear bar appears, or before

Uneven or worn tread can cause you to lose traction and steering control.

At an uncontrolled intersection, another vehicle arrived before you. You should:
  • Go first, since you're on the right
  • Slow down and yield to it
  • Sound your horn and proceed
  • Speed up to clear the intersection

Slow down and yield to it

Yield to a vehicle that has arrived first.
