About the Manitoba Class 6 knowledge test

To start learning to ride in Manitoba, you need a valid Manitoba driver's licence and you must pass MPI's Class 6 knowledge test: a supplementary test on the safe operation of a motorcycle. It isn't open book, and you have 30 minutes. The full practice test on this page is 25 motorcycle questions, and every answer comes with a short explanation from MPI's Motorcycle Handbook. Manitoba's road sign questions are here too, as a refresher.

Sample questions

A few questions from the practice bank. Tap one to see the answer.

About how much of the braking force does the front brake provide, according to MPI?

70 per cent

It's the strongest brake on the motorcycle.

What following distance does MPI's handbook recommend in ideal conditions?

Four seconds

Increase the count in bad conditions.

What is the dominant lane position on a multi-lane road?

The tire track closest to the line between lanes going the same way

It gives you room to move and makes it harder for another driver to box you in.

Above what speed must a motorcycle be leaned to turn or corner?

20 km/h

Leaning inward counters the force pushing the motorcycle outward.

When can't a Class 6 Learner Stage rider ride?

From a half hour before sunset to a half hour after sunrise

Learners may ride only in daylight hours.

Your throttle sticks. What's the first thing to do?

Immediately squeeze the clutch lever

Then twist the throttle back and forth; if it won't close, turn off the engine with the kill switch.

At what angle does MPI say you can cross railway tracks when there's other traffic?

45 degrees or more

It's not necessary to cross head-on at a full 90 degrees.

Frequently asked questions

What is on the Manitoba Class 6 knowledge test?

MPI calls it a supplementary knowledge test on the safe operation of a motorcycle. It's for people who already hold a Manitoba driver's licence, so it's about riding, not the road signs you were tested on for your first licence. It isn't open book, and you have 30 minutes.

How many questions are on the test, and what do I need to pass?

MPI doesn't publish the number of questions or the pass mark. Our practice tests have 25 motorcycle questions with 20 correct to pass (80%).

How much does it cost?

$12 for the knowledge test and $35 for the road test. If you're in GDL and fail the knowledge test, you wait seven days to retake it; after a failed road test, you wait 14 days.

Do I have to take a motorcycle course?

Yes, if it's your first motorcycle learner's licence. After the knowledge test you get a Class 6 M Stage licence, which lets you ride only during the approved one-day training course. Once you finish the course, you get your Class 6 Learner Stage licence.

What are the rules for a Class 6 learner?

At least nine months in the Learner Stage, no passengers, no towing, no riding from a half hour before sunset to a half hour after sunrise, and no drugs or alcohol in your system.

Can I take the test in French?

Yes. MPI offers knowledge and road tests in English and French. Choose your language when you book.

Are these the real MPI test questions?

No. Every question here is original, written from MPI's Motorcycle Handbook. This site is not affiliated with Manitoba Public Insurance.

How many practice questions are there?

361: 239 motorcycle questions, plus 122 Manitoba road sign questions as a separate refresher. Practice tests don't repeat a question until you have seen every question in that part.
