Step by step
- Hold a valid Manitoba driver's licence of any class and stage, and be at least 16. Study MPI's Motorcycle Handbook.
- Book the Class 6 knowledge test with an Autopac agent or online at mpi.mb.ca (minors can't book the knowledge test online). Tests are by appointment, on weekdays, in English or French. The motorcycle testing season runs from May 1 to Oct. 30.
- Pass the knowledge test ($12, 30 minutes). You get a Class 6 M Stage licence, which lets you ride only while taking the motorcycle training course.
- Complete the approved one-day motorcycle training course (contact Safety Services Manitoba for scheduling and fees). You then get your Class 6 Learner Stage licence.
- After at least nine months as a learner, pass the Class 6 road test ($35): a motorcycle controls test and an on-road test. You move to the Intermediate Stage (minimum 15 months), then the Full Stage.
What to bring
- Your valid Manitoba driver's licence
- For the road test: a motorcycle in good working order and its Vehicle Registration Certificate showing it's registered and insured
- An approved motorcycle helmet and proper riding gear (no flip-flops, open-toed shoes or bicycle helmets)

| Class 6 road test | $35 |

Charges as listed in MPI's Motorcycle Handbook (October 2026); they may change. The course fee is set by Safety Services Manitoba.
If you don't pass
In GDL, you wait seven days to retake a failed knowledge test and 14 days after a failed road test. Only one test of the same class per day. Without a properly registered and insured motorcycle, the road test is cancelled and the fee isn't refunded.
Once you have your licence
- Learner Stage (at least nine months): no passengers, no towing, no riding from a half hour before sunset to a half hour after sunrise, and no drugs or alcohol in your system.
- Time in the M Stage doesn't count toward the nine-month Learner Stage.
- Intermediate Stage (at least 15 months): you may carry a passenger and tow, but still no drugs or alcohol. Time already served in the Class 5 Intermediate Stage counts.
- Full Stage: no drugs or alcohol while riding for the first 36 months.
- If you take the road test on a three-wheeled motorcycle, you're restricted to three-wheeled motorcycles.
