MTO Step-by-step guide

How to get your Ontario G1 licence

Who can apply, what to bring, what it costs, what happens if you don't pass, and the rules once you have it. Then practise for the test.

Step by step

  1. Study the Official MTO Driver's Handbook and practise both sections: road signs and rules of the road.
  2. Go to a DriveTest centre. You don't need an appointment. In downtown Toronto you can also go to the ServiceOntario location at Bay and College, by appointment only.
  3. Bring original identification that shows your legal name and date of birth. The accepted documents depend on your status, for example a passport, citizenship card, permanent resident card, study or work permit, or Ontario Photo Card.
  4. Since May 11, 2026, you also declare that Ontario is your primary place of residence and that your presence in Canada is legal.
  5. Pay the G1 licence package fee, then pass a vision test and the knowledge test to get your G1.
