- Class 7 firstTo learn on a motorcycle
- 30-day permitFor drivers who already hold Class 1-5
Step by step
- If you're new to driving, get an Instruction Permit (Class 7) first: from age 16, written and sign recognition tests and a vision test at Highway Safety/Access PEI. Practise those on our main PEI page. The Class 7 covers learning on a motorcycle when you're accompanied by a driver licensed for that class.
- Study Chapter 5, "Motorcycles and Mopeds", of the PEI Driver's Handbook, then pass the written or oral test on motorcycles. You can ask for an oral test if you can't read and understand the written one.
- While you practise on an Instruction Permit, a small yellow learner's decal goes on the back of your helmet.
- Pass a road test on a motorcycle. The handbook says the steps are very similar to those for a Class 5 licence. If you pass on a motorcycle but not in a car, your licence is for motorcycle operation only.
- If you already hold a valid Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence, you can apply for a Motorcycle Instruction Permit instead: daytime use only within 30 km of your residence, no passengers, valid for 30 days from the date of endorsement.
What to bring
- A birth certificate (not needed if you hold another class of licence)
- Parental approval if you're under 18
- For the road test: a registered, inspected motorcycle with liability insurance (pink card) and the registration
- An approved helmet (DOT, CSA, ANSI or Snell) and eye protection
Fees
We couldn't confirm current fees on the Government of PEI website, so ask Highway Safety/Access PEI.
If you don't pass
If you fail the written or oral test, you can book an appointment and take another test at a later date.
Once you have your licence
- Zero blood alcohol while you're in the Graduated Driver Licensing program.
- With a Motorcycle Instruction Permit: daytime only, within 30 km of home, and no passengers.
- Your motorcycle must be registered, insured and inspected every year, with the headlight on whenever you ride.
- Both you and any passenger must wear an approved helmet.
- A Class 6 licence covers Classes 6 (motorcycles) and 8 (mopeds) only.
