About the PEI motorcycle tests

To get a Class 6 motorcycle licence in Prince Edward Island you pass a written or oral knowledge test on motorcycles, a vision test and a road test on a motorcycle. New drivers learn on an Instruction Permit (Class 7), with its own written and sign recognition tests. The practice tests on this page cover the motorcycle knowledge test, from Chapter 5 of the PEI Driver's Handbook, and the road signs, with every answer explained. For the Class 7 rules test, use our main PEI page.

A Motorcycle Instruction Permit is valid for how long?

30 days from the date of endorsement

It's meant for drivers who already hold a Class 1 to 5 licence.

Which part of the lane is often recommended as the best place to ride?

The left wheel track of a car

You avoid the oil in the centre, see and are seen by oncoming traffic, and use your full lane.

If your rear wheel accidentally locks while braking hard, you should:

Keep it locked until you stop

If the motorcycle is upright and going straight, you can still control it.

Above about 20 km/h, how do you turn a motorcycle?

Lean with it, using counter steering (push steering)

The greater your speed, the more you must lean.

Where do most collisions involving motorcycles happen?

At intersections

The main causes are oncoming left turners and vehicles entering from side streets.

In a riding group, who should set the pace?

The last motorcycle

No one should have to race to keep up.

How should you clean your helmet?

Only with soap and water

Other cleaners can damage it.

How to study

  1. Read Chapter 5, "Motorcycles and Mopeds", and the Classified Licences pages of the PEI Driver's Handbook.
  2. Take a full practice test: 20 motorcycle knowledge questions, then 20 signs, each scored on its own.
  3. Review the questions you missed, then use Smart practice to drill your weak topics.
  4. When you score 16 or more on both parts several times in a row, you're ready for the real tests.

Frequently asked questions

Which tests do I take for a PEI motorcycle licence?

A knowledge test (written or oral) on motorcycles, a vision test and a road test on a motorcycle. New drivers learn on an Instruction Permit (Class 7) first, which means written and sign recognition tests and a vision test.

How many questions are on the motorcycle test, and what do I need to pass?

Prince Edward Island doesn't publish the number of questions or the pass mark for the motorcycle test. Our motorcycle practice tests have 20 questions with 16 correct to pass (80%), the pass mark used on our Class 7 page, and the road sign practice tests have 20 with 16 to pass.

How old do I have to be?

17 for a Class 6 licence, with parental approval if you're under 18. You can get an Instruction Permit (Class 7) to start learning at 16.

I already have a driver's licence. How do I start riding?

If you hold a valid Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence, you can apply for a Motorcycle Instruction Permit. It's valid for 30 days from the date of endorsement, for daytime use only within 30 km of your residence, with no passengers.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes. PEI law requires an approved motorcycle helmet (DOT, CSA, ANSI or Snell) for the driver and every passenger. While you practise on an Instruction Permit, a small yellow learner's decal goes on the back of your helmet.

Where do I practise the Class 7 written and sign tests?

On our main Prince Edward Island page. New riders learn on the same Instruction Permit (Class 7) as car learners.

Are these the real PEI test questions?

No. Every question here is original, written from the PEI Driver's Handbook. This site is not affiliated with the Government of Prince Edward Island.

How many practice questions are there?

348: 229 motorcycle knowledge questions and 119 road sign questions. Practice tests don't repeat a question until you have seen every question in that part.
