Step by step
- Study the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook and practise both exams: the Basic exam on rules and safe driving, and the Sign exam.
- Book your written exam online with MySGI, or call or visit a motor licence issuer. In Regina and Saskatoon you can also walk in without an appointment, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
- Bring several pieces of original ID (no photocopies) that show your full name and date of birth, such as a birth certificate, passport or immigration documents, plus a signature on a Saskatchewan Health card, passport or Canadian driver's licence.
- If you're a first-time driver aged 15 to 17, bring a completed Signature/Guarantor Form for First Time Drivers signed by a parent or guardian. You can get it from SGI, a motor licence issuer or your driver educator.
- Pass the Basic and Sign exams to get your Class 7 learner's licence.
What to bring
- Original proof of your name and date of birth (birth certificate, passport or immigration documents)
- A document with your signature (Saskatchewan Health card, passport or Canadian driver's licence)
- Signature/Guarantor Form if you're 15 to 17 and a first-time driver
- Proof of a name change, if your name has changed
Fees
SGI doesn't publish a single fee page we could check, so ask for the current exam fee when you book. If you miss a booked exam without cancelling, you pay for the rescheduled appointment.
If you don't pass
If you don't pass, book another exam appointment the same way.
Once you have your licence
- You must always drive with a supervisor in the seat beside you.
- Your supervisor needs a Class 5 licence or higher from a Canadian or U.S. jurisdiction, held for at least 365 days in the last three years, and can't be a novice driver.
- To move past Class 7 you need SGI-approved driver education: high school driver education, or at least six hours in class and six hours in the car (age 16 and up).
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the Saskatchewan learner's exam online?
If you're in a high school driver education program, yes: you write it online with a free MySGI account, which any motor licence issuer can set up for you. Everyone else books the exam with MySGI or a motor licence issuer and writes it in person.
Do I need my parent's permission at 15, 16 or 17?
Yes. First-time drivers aged 15 to 17 need a Signature/Guarantor Form signed by a parent or guardian. Once consent is given, it can't be withdrawn.
Can I get my learner's licence at 15?
Only if you're in a high school driver education program. Otherwise the minimum age is 16.
