How the written driving test works in Canada

Every province and territory runs its own knowledge test, sometimes called the written test or the learner's test. You pass it, along with a vision test, to get your first licence: a G1 in Ontario, a Class 7 in most provinces, a Class 5 learner's licence in Manitoba and Quebec. The questions come from that province's official driver's handbook and cover two things: road signs, and the rules of the road and safe driving.

The format is different everywhere. Ontario and Nova Scotia have a signs section and a rules section; Alberta and B.C. mix everything in one test; most provinces need 80% to pass, and Newfoundland and Labrador needs 85%. Each practice test here follows its own province's format, and every answer comes with a short explanation written from that province's handbook.
